THE TARRYTOWN MUSIC HALL
About
The Tarrytown Music Hall is a miraculous testament to American theatre history, having been recognized as the oldest theater in Westchester, the fifth oldest in New York State, and one of the oldest in the United States. Built in 1885, it was designed by the firm of De Lemos and Cordes, whose works included the Siegel-Cooper, Macy’s at Herald Square, and Adams department stores, along with a series of banks and multiple country houses. It is architecturally significant as being the “finest extant example” of a non-residential building designed in the Queen Anne style of anywhere in Westchester County and culturally significant for its enduring use as a performing arts venue for over a century. Under the stewardship of the non-profit Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory, it currently operates as a theatre school for aspiring young actors and performers, a theatre venue for local school productions, a concert hall for a variety of musicians and dancers, and a touring house for world-class musical artists. Tasked with maintaining such an important cultural venue, Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory engaged Gregory Dietrich Preservation to apply for matching grant funding to address multiple issues plaguing the building, including failing brick, terra cotta, brownstone, marble, bluestone, and rubblestone; rusted and corroded metalwork; deteriorated wood trim, wood clapboard, and wood-sash windows; and a failing roof system. Gregory Dietrich Preservation’s ability to secure a $500,000 matching grant through the New York State Consolidated Funding Application grant program has enabled its owners to address these maintenance issues, thereby ensuring that this venerable performing arts venue will flourish in the coming decades.
