ROCKLAND PRINT WORKS HISTORIC DISTRICT
About
Located in the Town of Haverstraw, New York, the former Rockland Print Works is emblematic of the textile mills that once dominated the industrial landscape of New England. Between 1837 and 1909 its owner, Garner & Co., was a giant of the American textile industry, boasting multiple factories throughout New York and Pennsylvania. Rockland Print Works is not only significant for its association with Garner & Co. as a center of textile production and finishing, but also for its cohesive ensemble of purpose-built, mid-to-late nineteenth-century mill buildings exhibiting an unorthodox combination of architectural references to the Greek Revival, Second Gothic Revival, Italianate and Colonial Revival styles. Intent on harnessing this unique collection of buildings, the non-profit Garner Arts Center acquired the twenty-acre property with the intent of rehabilitating its vacant buildings for a host of activities, including arts creation, education, exhibition and commerce. In fulfillment of its mission, the Garner Arts Center engaged Gregory Dietrich Preservation to get the former Rockland Print Works listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places in order to bring national recognition to its complex and to qualify its buildings for future grant funding. Today, the Garner Arts Center has evolved into a cultural anchor that not only promotes the arts, but also Haverstraw’s historic and eclectic architectural past.
